WHAT IS SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING?

SkinPen Microneedling is a professional skin-rejuvenation treatment that uses a sterile cartridge of very fine needles to create thousands of controlled microscopic channels in the skin. These tiny channels activate the skin’s natural healing response, encouraging the production and remodeling of collagen and elastin. WHAT MAKES SKINPEN PRECISION ELITE MICRONEEDLING DIFFERENT?

SkinPen Precision Elite is the newer, upgraded version of the original SkinPen Precision. It creates the same type of controlled microchannels and produces the same collagen-remodeling response, but the device is designed to make treatments more consistent, efficient, safe, and comfortable. There are a few features that make SkinPen Precision Elite microneedling safer, quicker, and more effective:

1.  Active needle retraction: Many standard pens use a spring-loaded cartridge. During movement across the skin, the needles may not retract fully before the cartridge advances, which can contribute to scratching or dragging, which can cause discomfort. SkinPen Elite’s ActiSine technology actively retracts the needles, allowing the cartridge to glide more smoothly and reducing the risk of unnecessary tearing or linear scratches.

2. More reliable treatment depth: The SkinPen Precision Elite is validated to deliver its selected depth consistently from 0.25 to 2.5 mm. With less regulated devices, the number displayed on the dial may not always equal the depth actually reaching the skin, especially when pressure, skin thickness or battery power changes.

3. Consistent motor speed: The device is designed to maintain approximately 7,000 RPM regardless of the treatment depth, skin resistance or remaining battery charge. This helps provide a more uniform number of microchannels across the treatment area. It’s especially beneficial for patients with scarring, like from acne, as it keeps a consistent speed (and depth) regardless of textural irregularities like from scar tissue.

4. Needle sharpness is validated: SkinPen states that the Precision Elite needles have been validated to remain sharp for up to 80 minutes, including use on scar tissue. Dull needles can produce more trauma, discomfort and dragging rather than clean vertical microchannels

5. FDA clearance and clinical documentation: SkinPen Precision Elite is an FDA-cleared Class II powered microneedling device. Its cleared indications include improving facial acne scars in adults and across all Fitzpatrick skin types and improving neck wrinkles in Fitzpatrick types II–IV.

HOW DOES SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING WORK?

During a SkinPen Precision Elite Microneedling procedure, thousands of tiny “micro-channels” are created in the skin. These microchannels trigger the skins natural wound healing and repair process. This process occurs in three overlapping stages:

Inflammation: Platelets and immune cells release growth factors and signaling molecules.

Proliferation: Fibroblasts become active and begin producing new extracellular matrix, collagen and elastin.

Remodeling: Early collagen—largely type III—is gradually reorganized into stronger, more mature type I collagen over the following weeks and months. This can continue for 6 months!

WHO ISN’T A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING?

If you are in overall good health, you have better odds of being a good candidate for SkinPen Microneedling. Patients with the following conditions typically are not approved to get microneedling or require pre-care:

• Acne or treating acne with medication
• A blood disorder or are prescribed anticoagulants (aka blood thinners)
• Cancer and are being treated with radiation or chemotherapy
• Frequent cold sores or skin rashes (those with cold sores must pretreat with medication)
• Your skin forms hard, raised scars when healing (keloids)
• Skin growths, freckles, or moles that change in shape or size or bleed
• Allergy to stainless steel or topical numbing ingredients
• Eczema or psoriasis

As with any cosmetic procedure, there are some risks. The most common side effects include redness and minor skin irritation immediately following a Microneedling procedure. If more serious side effects occur, such as bleeding, bruising, or peeling, contact your dermatologist.
